2. What are the differences between Contra Angle Handpiece, Straight Handpiece and Motor?
Low speed handpiece consists of three parts: Contra-angle handpiece, Straight handpiece, and Motor. Their functions and differences are as follows:
- Contra-angle handpiece is designed for root canal treatment and must be connected to a motor to operate. It comes in two types: push-button and latch-type. Its technical specifications include a working air pressure of 0.3–0.35 mpa, a bur standard diameter of 2.345–2.355 mm or 1.595–1.6 mm, and a speed of at least 180,000 rpm. It supports multiple speed ratios, including 1:1 (equal speed), reduction ratios such as 4:1, 10:1, 16:1, 20:1, and 64:1, as well as an increase ratio of 1:5. Water output is available via either an internal or external water channel, and the light source can be LED or fiber optic.
- Straight handpiece is used for polishing and grinding prosthetic teeth, and also requires a motor connection to function. Its working air pressure is 0.3–0.35 mpa, with a bur standard diameter of 2.345–2.355 mm and a speed of at least 180,000 rpm. It operates at a 1:1 equal speed ratio.
- Motor serves as the power source, connecting to either the straight or contra-angle handpiece to drive operation. It operates at a working air pressure of 0.3–0.35 mpa, with a speed of at least 18,000 rpm, and is available in 2-hole or 4-hole models.
