It is important that your handpieces are working properly.  If not properly maintained it can fail prematurely, costing you more in the long run.  In general, newer handpieces have a life expectancy of 18-24 months, while older models closer to 12 months, but proper dental handpiece maintenance can prolong the life of the handpiece and maximize performance.
  1. Before using the handpiece, check whether the pipes of the water supply system are aging and rusty, and whether there are foreign objects in the water pipes.
  2. Check whether the compressed air produced by the air compressor is clean, and the compressed air cannot contain water and mechanical oil.
  3. Check whether the pressure gauge of the dental unite is damaged.
  4. Before using different models of handpiece, the pressure gauge should be adjusted correctly according to the pressure range written in the instruction manual. Pressure that is too high or too low will shorten the life of your handpiece.
  5. Add cleaning lubricating oil twice a day, and choose a suitable injector.
  6. Before high-temperature and high-pressure disinfection, be sure to add cleaning lubricating oil to discharge the dirt and foreign matter in the handpiece, then put it into a high-temperature and high-pressure disinfection bag, and then perform high-temperature and high-pressure disinfection. The setting time for 132° disinfection is 15 minutes; the setting time for 123° disinfection is 20 minutes.
  7. Never soak the handpiece in acidic disinfectant, otherwise it will seriously damage the collet and the internal structure of the handpiece.
  8. Handpieces with different functions, characteristics, and speeds have certain requirements for the burs used, and the burs that meet the speed of the handpiece must be used. Never use a bur that is bent, wobbly, worn, or too long or too short.
  9. Do not idle the handpiece without a needle.
  10. Do not bump or drop your handpiece. If this happens, you must correct the machine head and replace the collet before using it.
  11. Do not use an ultrasonic cleaner to clean your handpiece.
